Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Im a 58 year old grocery checker and I never have any problems with my back. I couple of days ago on my day off I was vacuuming and bent over ... well I immediately had a lower back spasm and couldn't get up. It is easier now to get up and down , but I mainly have to stay straight. Could that have been my heart as I do have high cholesterol and my dad died of a heart attack at age 53 (although he did smoke for years) I ve never smoked.
Hello, I do understand your concern.High Cholestrol per se does not cause back spasms.Considering your history with hypercholestrolemia and family history you spasm can be as a result of following causes.many medications for control of cholestrerol can cause spasms. You have not mentioned your cholesterol levels and medication you are taking. Mainly cholesterol medications which are commonly used and may cause spasms include statins and fibrates. The duration and dosage both are linked with myopathies. They are rare side effects though. Also imp is to know whether its a one time event or you are experiencing back spasms and cramps often. if it is repetitive and persistent you should consult a doctor as soon as possible. Cardiac disease is characterized by symptoms such as shortness of breathchest pain and decrease excercise tolerance .If you are experiencing any of these then too it is better to get youeself investigated.
