Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Stretching Be Done While Having Severe Sciatica Pain In Calf And Ankle?
I was diagnosed by ER doc as suffering from sciatica with caveat that my acute pain focus was in my calf and ankle, so severe requiring 2 doses of 2 different IV pain medications. Other causes like blood clots and muscle wasting disease were eliminated by tests. Three weeks later, I still have calf pain although only about 1 - 3 on the pain scale. I have tried to walk regularly and also started to do stretching exercises. Since I still have calf pain, should I hold off on the stretching? Could the remaining calf pain warrant additional investigation like a neurology exam?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi,
Treatment of sciatica from your cases depends on the findings of MRI LS spine. If there is significant nerve compression or impingement then surgical correction should be considered. If not significant then a short course of steroids and muscle relaxants should be taken for one week. After the acute symptoms subside you can start exercises.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nishad B. N., General & Family Physician
