A hole in the membrane of the ear can cause defective hearing. More over it exposes the delicate structures in the middle ear to infection causing further damage. If middle ear gets infected this infection may even reach the brain causing a very serious problem.
Best treatment is surgical repair of the membrane. Your mother will have better hearing capability and it will prevent lot of complications which could occur if the hole is not closed.
