Can Surgery For Popping And Locking Jaw Bone Correct The Problem Of Overbite?

Hi, for a long time now I've had my jaw joint near my ear popping and locking and now it seems that its completely locked and now there is pain. This morning I went to get my braces off, but even though my teeth are completely straight, I still have an overbite. My ortho noticed about my jaw problem and told me that I have TMJ and that I might need surgery to fix it so he referred me to see my general dentist tomorrow. So my question is, if I do end having to need the surgery, will it also fix my overbite?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain overbite correction is done mostly by the orthodontic treatment and even after the orthodontic treatment if the overbite is not reduced then there must be some deficiency in the treatment..

TMJ occurs in some patients following othrodontic treatment and the condition can worsen in case if you have braces and TMJ togather..

If you have a locked jaw or trismus due to TMJ or TMD it can be corrected by surgery but it will not improve the overbite and you will have to undergo orthodontic treatment only for improvement..

I would suggest you to first of all consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated about your TMJ problem and possible need for non surgical or surgical treatment and then only proceed further..

Hope this information helps..
