Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Swelling And Bruising On The Leg After An Injury Be Treated?
I am a 64 yr old female who missed the last step of a 4- step wooden plank stairway and fell. Injured the right side of my right foot. swelling and bruising, below my toes on upper half of foot. It does not hurt unless I put any pressure on it. Have been walking on my heel. There is a bluish/purple bruise on the bottom of my foot. I just wondered if I could have broken a bone in my foot but again, I have no pain unless I put any pressure on the bottom of my foot. Thank you. This was done yesterday.
Yes, it may be deep vein thrombosis or so-called DVT although this is not very likely. I mean that clot is formed inside the big leg vessel. So you need to do Doppler ultrasound to rule this.
Vein thrombosis which is manifested with unilateral swelling of the leg, pain in calf and lividity of the skin.
Some conditions such as pregnancy, obesity and recent surgery may increase the risk of it.
This may be serious if the blood clot travels to the heart and lungs so it should be ruled out as soon as possible and then appropriate treatment can be started.
In most cases, it includes strict resting heparin infusions and aspirin. More invasive procedures are rarely required.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
