Can Swelling In The Thigh Caused By A Hit Indicate Blood Clot?

My husband was cutting a very large tree and a huge trunk like branch came swinging down slamming into his thigh. He now has swelling the size of a soccer ball. It is hard, he can walk but it aches. Can he in danger of a blood clot or anything at all? or is this just a swelling that has to go through a natural course or should I take him to the ER? Thanks DG

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be a hematoma, it is nothing but a collection of blood following a blunt trauma. Nothing much to worry and most cases resolve spontaneously. As of now you can use analgesics / anti inflammatory combination like aceclofenac / seratiopeptdase for symptomatic relief. Warm compression can be applied for faster recovery. If symptoms persist, it is better to consult a physician and get evaluated. An ultrasound scan can be done for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
