Can Swollen Lymph Node Under Ears Cause Night Sweats?

Hello, I’ll tell you my story… First of all, I must say that I am by no means a promiscuous person and that I have never in my life used drugs either. I am a 40-year-old good looking (166cm, 65kg) and (I hope so) healthy female. The thing is that I caught a cold about a week ago and I had one lymph node under my ear swollen (just one). I also have mild night sweats around my neck and in the chest area and no fever. The doctor prescribed me some antibiotics, I feel better and the swollen lymph node has almost completely disappeared; however, what worries me is sweating by night since I’ve read that it might be one possible symptom of being HIV positive. I must say that the last time I had unprotected sex was in 2002 with a guy I was dating for four months, and before that in 2001 (also unprotected, but it was a two-and-a-half-year relationship). It was normal, heterosexual, vaginal sex, sometimes oral (both giving and receiving). Although both of my ex sex partners still look healthy to me, in fact I don’t know their HIV status. Never again did I have unprotected sex, and since 2004 I’ve lived in celibacy. During these years, that is, since 1998, I remember that I had flu once in 2004, and bronchitis in 2009 (it wasn’t serious though), and now this, feverless sore throat. All my blood rates are normal; I have no cough, no yeast infections, no rash, no fever, no decreased appetite, no diarrhea, and no weight loss. The question is: what is my risk of being HIV positive 9 years afterwards? I know that the best thing would be to do a test, but at the moment I don’t have the nerve to do it. Thanks in advance, I would appreciate any answer! Anxiety

Hi,

Noted your detailed history and understood the concerns.
Since your lymph node has regressed well you do not have to worry as the cause would definitely have been infective or allergic.
Night sweats can be due to many a reasons, infections being one, another could be due to anxiety and stress and it looks you might have these a lot.
As the blood tests are normal this is a good indication.
Also get the STD status of blood to be stress-free.
Consult your Doctor if the symptoms continue and get further evaluation done so that if any positive finding can be treated accordingly.
If everything is normal then control your stress and anxiety.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
