Can Taking Truvada Cause Weight Gain?

I am HIV- and have been taking Truvada now for exactly one month. i am pretty regular at the gym and maintain a consistent weight of about 174-l75. Over the past month, I have gained about 8 lbs. It s not from Thanksgiving holiday. I know that. Most of the weight is belly fat. Is there some correlation with the Truvada regimen? Is it temporary or permanent?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is unlikely to cause weight gain. Truvada is commonly prescribed for the treatment and prevention of HIV infection. It does not cause weight gain however, unexplained weight loss, severe tiredness, and muscle aches / weakness can occur with its use. I advise you to consult your doctor for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
