Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
This evening I went to the bathroom and saw bright red blood in my urine. I had taken Metformin about 45 minutes earlier. I went to the bathroom again later and saw blood again. I feel the urge to urinate and when I do so, blood appears again. Can taking metformin cause this problem? I did take it on an empty stomach.
Metformin belongs to the group of medications known as biguanides is used to treat type 2 DM. It helps control blood sugar levels and thus prevent serious complications of DM. It is also used to treat menstruation related disorder known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in women. Metformin may increase risk of having urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis or urosepsis which can cause blood in urine or hematuria. If you have bladder pain, bloody or cloudy urine, difficult, burning or painful urination or lower back or side pain then check with your doctor right away. Some investigations like urine R/M/E and C/S, USG of W/A, urethral or prostatic swab for C/S, S.Cretinine, X ray KUB region A/P view etc should be done to find out the exact causes for your hematuria and then treat them accordingly.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
