Hi,
I've gone through your query and I understand quite well your concern
Epilex is a good and safe medication when is used in a appropriate doses. But, you must also know that all medications have side effects.Epilex can cause attention deficits and hyperactivity, but less compared to other side effects. these other side effects: decreased apettite or increased one, weight gain etc., but this medication is unlikely to cause permanently
brain damage. Although these side effects affect
liver and supress
bone marrow, so I suggest you that a liver function test and count blood cells test should be done in the first two months in order to monitor any side effects on them.
According to the protocol of treatment a recommended dosage is 20-60 mg/kg body weight( I don't know exactly the weight of your child to calculate it, but I'm sure that your
neurologist has done it)So,it is to be taken to the highest optimal dose of an anti-convulsant and even if then seizures are not controlled, then another drug is added.
Fever is not a side effect of Epilex, but please monitor it regularly and talk to your doctor as soon as possible, because it can induce and aggravate the frequency of your son's seizures.
Wish your son good health,
Dr. Ermira Biu
