Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I was diagonosed with a DVT at the age of 17, they was unable to find a cause as i didnt smoke, not a heavy drinker, not injecting drugs or no operation with no family history but now me and my partner wish to start a family of our own.... Will taking warfarin cause me to be infertile??
The cause of your DVT seems to be unprovoked and the same may require longer duration of anticoagulants in the form of Warfarin tablets. Warfarin therapy has no proven effect on either male or female infertility and seldom affects the same, hence safe to use.
However Warfarin in pregnant women is absolutely contraindicated and hence must be avoided and if the need for anticoagulation arises then Injectable anticoagulants must be started. At the same time care must be taken to have a regular check of PT/INR levels while on warfarin therapy and to avoid green leafy vegetables.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Santosh K. Pandey, General & Family Physician
