Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 9 month old grandson has had diarrhea for 11 days. He appears to be teething. He is drooling with a lot of saliva. He also has a runny nose and cough. My daughter, his mother, decided to give him just his formula and rice cereal to see if the diarrhea might improve. She thought the diarrhea could be caused by a food allergy, so she thought she would take the other foods away to see if that helped with the diarrhea. So far that did not seem to help. The diarrhea is green and has had mucus at times. He is also peeing more with more wet diapers. The diarrhea has caused a very bad diaper rash. We got some medication today for the diaper rash, but we are concerned about the diarrhea continuing for 11 days. Do you have any recommendations?
** Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern.
1. Opinion are divided over the issue since The American Academy of Pediatrics says fever and diarrhea are not the normal symptoms of teething whereas some Pediatrician believes that diarrhea and diaper rash can be caused because of teething [teething diarrhea].
2. Since it's 11 days running thus consult a child specialist since baby diarrhea can also be caused by virus, bacteria, stress, food intolerance and green diarrhea at his age [9 months] indicates that he is not feeding well and may also be due to mother taking iron supplements/antibiotics
3. If after proper cleaning, keeping him hydrated, diarrhea persists see your doctor immediately as dehydartion can set very quickly in children and old patients.
