Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Using Mirena IUD Cause Depression, Anxiety And Panic Attacks?
I have the Mirena IUD and have been experiencing depression, anxiety and panic attacks since December 2015. I have had the IUD since Aug 2014 and have had no problems. There is no cause for these symptoms. Is it possible that the IUD is the cause? I have come across information that suggests that is the case.
Yes, it may cause depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) which acts by releasing a hormone progestogen into the uterus. Its common side effects include headache, acne, breast tenderness, irregular bleeding and abdominal cramps. It is also known to cause mood changes including depression, increased feelings of nervousness or anxiety and panic attacks apparently caused by the hormone progestogen.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
