Thanks for contacting with your health concern.
1. As you are a diagnosed case and under treatment, thus following points are worth mentioning:
i. As your gender can't be deduced, it is worth mentioning that some of the risk factors which directly attribute to the disease are:
- Age [over 50], sex [female],
Menopause [protective action of
estrogen on bones is lost], any secondary causes like
diabetes, sedentary lifestyle.
PS. It could be primary
osteoporosis [senile/post menopausal] or secondary to some disease
ii. regarding the safety/duration of dosage, your attending physician/
Endocrinologist will be in better position to let you know about the same [so periodic assessment of skeletal status and BMD [bone mineral density] is essential, because
- check with serum Calcium level since Vitamin D is required for calcium absorption and not vice versa. [The IOM suggests that those who take supplements may actually be getting too much calcium, putting them at risk for kidney stones]
iii. Take vit D3 [cholecalciferol] instead of D2 [ergocalciferol]
2. I at most can help with the preventive aspect:
i. Calcium intake; 1.0-1.5 g per day [banana, grapes,coriander, raisins, milk, green vegetables, lemon,mint,papaya,amla, guava,pineapple,turnip, tomato, apple,orange.
ii. Moderate Vitamin D intake: 400-800 IU per day or
calcitriol 0.25~g/day
[ carot, beetroot,spianch,radish,mint,amalaki rasayan,soyabean,cucumber, cabbage,vitamin D fortified: pineapple/yogurt/milk/dry mushroom/banana/ cod liver oil/sunshine.
iii. Moderate Phosphorus intake: cheese, peanut butter, chicken, nuts, caramel, whole grain bread.
iv. Avoidance of alcohol, cigarette, tobacco.
v. Periodic assessment of skeletal status and bone mineral.
vi. Single Drug which is extremely helpful and beneficial is 'Shatavari' which can be explained with the help of its active chemical constituent- Steroidal Saponins which are Phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens act as SERM's [selective estrogen receptors modulators] and stimulate osteoblastosis and suppress osteoclastosis and thus help in preventing bone loss.
PS. In modern medicine they also have SERM's [
raloxifene, idoxifene, tamoxifene], the action is similar as described.
