Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 57 year old male friend has been unstable on his feet for past few days. His gait when he walks is like a shuffle. Took him to local emergency room this morning and they told him he was vitamin deficient. Was told to take a multi vitamin and drink ensure. This afternoon he had to be carried upstairs to bed do to him not to be able to walk.
I appreciate your concern for your beloved friend. Based on the history given he seems to be suffering from deficiency of vitamin B12 until confirmed otherwise. Deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to abnormal neurological symptoms like ataxia (shaky movements and unsteady gait), muscle weakness, urinary incontinence, low BP, vision problems, dementia, psychoses, and mood disturbances. It is also associated with megaloblastic anemia. He needs to be properly evaluated to find out the possible cause for the vitamin deficiency and treatment with Injection vitamin B12 to overcome the deficiency state.
Hope this will help him. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
