Can Weight Loss Supplement Be Taken Along With Warfarin?
I take warfarin and I am looking at a supplement to help me loose a few pounds. I have a St. Jude s Valve & I have some a-fib. Is Coffee Bean Extract going to mess up my protime? This product has green coffee bean extract, Green tea extract & caffeine; also ginger root.
Hi & Welcome. I can understand your concerns regarding the safety of weight loss supplements while taking Warfarin.
Warfarin is an anticoagulant ("blood thinner") used to treat or prevent blood clots in veins or arteries, which can reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, or other serious conditions. It works by reducing the formation of Vitamin K in the liver.
Green tea extract contains high levels of Vitamin K, so if you take this "weight loss supplement" along Warfarin, it will increase the Vitamin K levels in the body and that can reduce the effectiveness of anticoagulant action of Warfarin.
Ginger root has been reported to cause bleeding, and taking it with Warfarin may increase that risk.
Coffee bean extract is not known to cause any such interactions.
