Can Wine Be Consumed During Pregnancy?

Hi,

My wife and I are having a big disagreement. We are currently trying to get pregnant, and she isn't at all concerned about having a bi-daily drink or two during this time. Also, she wants to have a glass of red wine occasionally while pregnant, and doesn't think it's an issue at all. What are the real risks associated with these actions, taking out the presence of any binge drinking?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your wife consumes alcohol while pregnant which is strongly discouraged. As your wife is pregnant whatever food she is taking is getting transferred to fetus. It can lead to low birth weight baby. It can leads to several birth anomalies such as fetal alcohol syndrome. It can impair growth and development mentally as well as physically. Your wife should be very much concerned about her diet. She should quit it immediately and should not have it till she will be feeding baby. She should take diet rich in multivitamins and drink plenty of fluids.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Take a good care of your health. Get Well soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
