Can Women Take Tamsulosin For UTI?

Your website states that tamsulosin is prescribed for men. I am a female and was just discharged from a hospital with a prescription for tamsulosin (0.4 mg cap). How often have you seen this medicine prescribed for women and is it OK to take? I am 87 and went to the emergency room with a lot of pain. Tests showed fluid around the kidney (I had a cat scan and ultra sound in the pelvic region.) and I think a minute sign of blood in my urine. The Dr. thinks I had passed a kidney stone and I am being treated also for a UTI.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Tamsulosin is not commonly prescribed in women. It is generally prescribed in man that have enlarged prostate.

In women, it is prescribed when they have bladder blockage or any obstruction of the urinary tract to help them urinate or to help body pass any kidney stone. In UTI infections antibiotic treatment is also necessary. You should take it daily, as long as prescribed by your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Suela Gjata,
