Chest X-ray Concludes COPD. Does It Indicate Anything Serious Like TB Or Tumor?
One of my relative did a chest X Ray recently and in the radioligists report following observations were made. 1. lung fields are over inflated and clear. 2.Both hila are prominent. 3.Cardiac size is within normal limits. 4. IMPRESSION : COPD . unfortunately radiaoligst was not available when he went to collect the report and went out of town for vacation. Does this report indicates anything serious like TB or tumour? He never had any serious ailments barring occassional cold and fever . He is a non smoker and has no breathing problem or any uneasiness. He is planning to go abraod and needs to clear medical examination including chest X ray for detecting TB.
Hello dear...
COPD means Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease...which indicates obstruction of the small airway passages in the lung..
It mainly includes:
1. Chronic bronchitis in which there is inflammation of airway passages
2. Emphysema in which there is damage to the elastic tissue of the airways
Presence of clear lung fields rule out the possibility of TB
Management includes:
1. Bronchodilators such as Salbutamol (oral or inhalation) which dilates the air passage, relieves the obstruction & maintains proper air flow in the lungs
2. Corticosteroids, which takes care of the inflammatory process
3. Antibiotics, if bacterial infection is suspected.
But since your relative is asymptomatic at present, it will be better to get a lung function test done & if anything significant is detected, then consult a Pulmonologist & start treatment.
Thanks & take care.
Dear friend, welcome and thanks for entrusting your query here at HCM!
I am Dr. Prasad Akole (Critical Care Expert- http://bit.ly/Dr-Prasad-Akole) and am glad to address to your query here.
The Xray reports over inflated lung fields- emphysema or COPD.
It is found in diseases like bronchitis, emphysema etc.
However, it needs to be interpreted with clinical examination as normal lungs with a deep breath may also mimic it.
It definitely does not suggest any TB or tumour.
Clearance for travel should not be a problem. And you say he has no symptoms or respiratory problems and is non- smoker.
Please take opinion of your physician to know if it indicates anything or he had any chest signs.
I see no worry.
I hope you are fully satisfied with the guidance I gave.
I would be glad to answer any further queries. May I request you to rate your experience here before you close.
Thank you and Good luck!
