Child. On And Off Slight Cough, Fever. Blood Count Normal With High Esr, Crp. Prescribed Augmentin. Serious?

My 2yr old grand=daughter has been suffering with fever and slight cough on and off since Oct 11th. Two visits to the pediatrician said "only viral" and "not to worry" However my daughter, who is a nurse requested urinalysis and lab work. Blood count was normal but she has high esr and crp. They prescribed Augmentin ans she has not had any more fevers since starting on Thursday. Her Lyme test was negative and they are sending her for further exam to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. My question is how serious can this be? She is very active and normal in every way other than labs, a typical 2yr. old! We are worried sick!

Pediatrician, Pulmonology 's  Response
Hi,

blood test tell that she has a bacterial infection.

I 'd suggest to test also for Mycoplasma pneumonie, since it is a very frequent cause of cough in this age group.

After that the doctor should give her the right choice of antibiotic.
