Child. Puss, Blackening With Cavities In Lower Molar, Infected Upper Teeth. Medication Or Root Canal Treatment?

My 9 year child has developed puss in lower molar teeth...also his upper teeth is also infected. We have consulted 2 doctors one is saying that antibiotics can cure this...but the other is recommending root canal treatment as he is suggesting that since the puss is aggravating it will infect more teeth. Also the shape of the teeth is also effected...its blackening with cavities. Please advice which solution we should go for?

HI, as per your question it seems that the lower molar is deeply carious and infection has reached the pulp. only medication will not cure it. Antibiotics for 3 days and root canal treatment will save the tooth. Ask your nearby dentist , he will first open the tooth for pus discharge and avoid giving curd, rice, banana, lady finger to your child until treatment is complete because these will initiate pus formation.

for upper teeth if there is pain and root canal is the option but if caries is small and tooth is asymptomatic then restoration will be done in it.
wish you a cure soon and take care.

hi...
please check out the tooth involved.. if it is the last one in the arch, its the permanent molar.. in that case you should go for the RCT and should take medication prescribed by dentist.. take the situation seriously..
if its second or third last tooth and is smaller in size, its temporary tooth.. although it will go eventually, but its presence till its desired time period is very important to maintain the arch form of your child.. so its equally important and should be treated (RCT and medication) the same way..
color and shape of the teeth can be restored by proper restorations... so no major issues for that...
but do take care of your child's dentition... and visit your dentist...

Thank you for the query. your child is 9 years old. But you did not mention which molar tooth is effected. The milk tooth molars will remain two to three years more in the mouth before shedding. It is important to keep this tooth in place as long as possible by doing the Root canal treatment ( called pulpectomy in case of milk tooth). Do not ignore. The presence of milk tooth molars are very important to maintain the integrity of future permanent tooth alignment. Your 1st doctor is wrong. Only antibiotics will not cure it. You need to RCT to reduce infection avoid extraction. But your 2nd doctor wrong to say that "aggravating pus" will effect more teeth. Many doctor unnecessary scare the patients to involve them in treatment line suggested by them. Go for RCT of the affected tooth. The next thing I would like to say that if your child's involved tooth is a permanent molar then you must be highly careful. Because the root of the tooth may not be completed by this time, and if that is the fact than normal RCT will not help your child. IN THT CASE YOU MUST SEE A QUALIFIED PEDIATRIC DENTIST TO TREAT THIS TOOTH EITHER BY A PROCEDURE CALLED APEXIFICATION OR APICAL PLUG USING MTA. Your child's other teeth which get blackened with cavities can be treated by simple restoration. Let your dentist examine the bad shape of your child's teeth. If he feels he will send you to an ORTHODONTIST for further opinion and correction if required. Good Luck

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Since the tooth is infected associated with abscess formation,i would would suggest you to get root canal treatment done.

Pus has to be drained and curetted.

Medications can relieve pain/infection temporarily.

Please do visit a dentist and get further treatment done.

Take care.
