Child. Red, Itchy , Painful Rashes With White Head On Whole Body. History Of Being In New Hot Tub. Prescribed Keflex. Any Ideas?

Hi..my office mate's nine year old son was in a brand new hot tub this weekend that was not treated w/any chemicals...just spring water. He and a bunch of kids his age were in it. That night, his mother thought he came down w/chicken pox as a rash came out on his trunk and then spread to the rest of his body...back, neck, ears, buttocks. It is a red rash that errupts w/a white head. It hurts when it errupts and itches. Two day old rash sites just look like large mosquito bites. Pediatrician is perplexed but says its not chicken pox and was given Keflex x 10days. What could this be?

From the information that you have given,it seems like the child is having" Bath Tub Folliculitis".It is bacterial infection of the hair follicle and usually subsides on his own.It is usually confused with chicken pox.I suggest you consult a dermatologist to get a right diagnosis as confusing skin rashes are better diagnosed by them.They will do appropriate examination and give treatment. Your Pediatrician has prescribed Keflex which is an antibiotic and can be taken and would not do any harm to the child.Apart from this child would need soothening lotion and antibiotic cream for local application.
