Child Diagnosed With Viral Fever, Ear Infection.Prescribed Medicines. Temperature Reduced. Still Follow Up With Doctor?

My 4 year old son had fever of 103.7F last Friday. Took him to doctor. They discovered a high white blood count. They had an ultra sound and a chest x-ray done. Results were not available on Friday. Doctor thought it was probably a viral issue. To control fever they recommended Tylonol and Motrim, bland diet, rest. Follow up on Monday. Still had a fever of about 100F or less. Doctor found ear infection. Prescribed zithromax for ear, and keep treating virus with above regime. Doctor called late Monday with results of ultrasound. Said spleen was enlarged probably due to virus and ear infection. Will follow up in 2 weeks. Should we limit activity in meantime. Is there anything else we should be looking for in the next 2 weeks. We will be on vacation next week. Should we still go?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

It seems your child is having an ear infection mostly due to a bacterial cause as there is increased WBC count.

Continue the antibiotic and fever medication as advised by the doctor.

Monitor his temperature, hydration, and activity.

You can postpone his vaccination till the fever and infection subsides.

If the fever is not subsiding with 48 to 72 hours, consult the doctor again for follow up.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
