my 3 yr old has been going through a growth spurt and eating everything in sight for 4 days. yesterday he pooped 6 times. it was soft but smelled fishy and this morning he pooped and it was soft but had lots of mucous in it. he says his stomach does not hurt but it did smell fishy still. he never really had a good appetite and I don t know if it s from the change in his eating or what?
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query at healthcaremagic.com and giving us this opportunity to clarify your doubts.
Well, there can be some changes in the stools consistency depending on the food intake. I will tell you some of the secret points (danger signs) for any loose stools which should immediately alert you and take you to your pediatrician.:
1) Is there blood AND mucous in the stools?
2) Is it very foul smelling each time?
3) Is it very watery, bulky, large volume?
4) Is it associated with pain in the abdomen?
5) Is it associated with fever, dehydration, reduced urine output, lethargy, tiredness?
I would actually want to know when did you deworm your son the last time. It would be a good idea rather to deworm him now if it was not done in the past 6 months. As long as the above danger signs are not seen, it is of no urgent concern. But, if in doubt you should take him to your pediatrican who can see him and treat him accordingly if any problem.
I hope I have been successful in clarifying your doubts and will be always available for any further queries of yours. Take care and stay healthy.
Hi,
Thanks for your query,
Nature of food reflects nature of stools.i will advise you to stop all kind of junk food, fried food, encourage him in eating healthy diet including salads.fruit,curd,.
Observe his stools and if they continue to be foul smelling, take him to pediatrician for further management,
Your child will be fine.
