Child Had A Dog Bite. Anti-rabies Injection Given In The Back. What To Do Now? Has Fever
Hello doctor,my son aged 5 yrs had dog bite about 20 days back.The dog was probably rabid,we are not sure as the dog was captured by dog catchers of municipality.We started anti-rabies injection from the same date of bite.A
chemist(pharmacist) of our area has till date given 4 injections in the back(Gluteal region) which we came to know is wrong site to get anti-rabies injection.We are worried now.Please suggest us what to do?
For the last 2 days he has fever but the site of dog bite is normal.

Hi,
For people previously unvaccinated and if the animal is suspected to be rabid the Rabies vaccine should be given as soon as possible after the bite followed by 4 vaccines 3,7 and 14 and 28 days after the bite for the intramuscular vaccine. The usual site of administering the rabies vaccine is the upper arm (deltoid) but in children it can be given on the anterolateral(front) aspect of thigh. The gluteal injection should be ok as long as it is intramuscular. Fever is reported as one of the side effects of rabies vaccine. The fever might also be due to the injection site abscess or some other infection not related to Rabies or its vaccine. Previously unvaccinated persons should also be given antibodies against rabies virus( Human Rabies Immune Globulin). Anyways its advisable to take your child to the local infectious disease control facility.

Hi, Your son aged 5 years had bite by a street dog, 20 days back, started A.R.V from that day, gave 4 injections, had fever since 2 days.
A.R.V injections can be given at any I.M site, gluteal region is not a contraindication.
Fever could be due to some other reason, and it is to be treated accordingly.One more injection of the A.R.V. should be given.

back injections are less immunogenic so better avoided.get the next dose of injection at the right place.after 3 weeks of final injection get the anti rabies antibodies done of your son.if the titre is normal relax if it is not thn get your child revaccinated.fever can be due to any cause so dont worry for it and get treated.
