Child Has Dry, Chapped Skin Near Vagina, Redness. What Is It?
i was changing my 3 year old daughters clothes about 2 weeks ago and noticed dry chappy skin on her bottom then I noticed it was on the sides of her inner thigh close to the vagina . Just tonight after putting her in the tub I realized it is now red and on the top of the vagina and pretty much all around it.its not bothering her and she has no symptoms of a Uti . Could it be red from her scratching at it or is this something more than just a dry skin condition? And what product do you recommend that is over the counter and safe to put on the private area?
There are several causes of a red genital area, but most infective causes usually cause itching and irritation as you rightly surmised in the question. Hence, fungal infections, bacterial infections and UTI seem less likely, but not impossible.
You should consider contact dermatitis, allergy (most commonly due to bubble bath chemicals), or scratching as the likely causes. A mild steroid could easily reduce the rash within 4-5 days. Please ask the pharmacist for a locally available OTC cream of hydrocortisone or clobetasone, both relatively mild steroids.
