Child Has Indigestion, Weight Loss, Vomiting. Prescribed Norfloxacin. Safe Medicine?
My baby boy is 5 and half months old. He is on Zerolac milk formula only till date. Since last 8 days, he is facing problem of indigestion. His milk formula intake has been reduced by almost 30% since last 8 days. We noticed weight loss of 200 gms in last 15 days. his current weight is 6.9 Kgs. Doc has given us drug called norfloxacin suspension to cure infection in stomach /indigestion. Also he did vomiting once today morning. Pl advise on this and also on when can we start other liquid food ?

Do not panic.
Nrfloxacin is an antibiotic given for some infections.
If yourchild is active,afebrile and feeding then I think you should withhold the medication.
Change her milk to Nusobee casein.Give her a digestive drop after meals and lots of fluids.
I think he should be well in 4 days.If he develops fever then go for investigations before giving him an antibiotic.

Norfloxacin a fluoroquinolone is often prescribed to treat stomach infection .However it's not recommended in infants and there are other safer alternative antibiotics like cephalosporins to treat gastrointestinal infections in infants. Please note that all medicines do have sideffects and the safety versus efficacy has to be judged as per individual case.
Since the child has vomiting and weight loss too there are chances of infant being dehydrated so it's advisable to give oral rehydration solution in sips to correct hydration.Small frequent formula feeds is better than large spaced out feeds.
Apart from this probiotics & zinc supplements are recommended to improve the child's digestion along with antibiotic for treating the infection .
