Child Has Loose Stools, No Foul Smell. Remedy?

Hi,
My four month old baby daugther is suffering from loose motions for the last one week. She passes watery stools with no foul smell attached. Last night we took her to a Physician who prescribed an injection (I don't know its name) and gave some syrup type fluids. After getting injected, she could not stay at rest the whole night and went on crying unabated. And from this morning, she has been passing stools that are greenish black... Is there any remedy for her? What should we do to help her get rid of this condition.

Thanking in advance

Hello Siyal,

Thanks for posting,

Your daughter is suffering from non-febrile gastroenteritis which could be as a result of bacterial, fungal, viral, parasitic, protozoal infection etc. Already having the diarrhea for more than a week means the situation should be considered serious as risk of dehydration and/or electrolyte imbalance is a possible resulting complication. You start first by re-hydrating the baby with oral rehydration solution/salt to prevent dehydration and electrolyte disorder. After beginning the re-hydration, do consult a pediatrician as soon as possible, a stool exams +/-culture could be done to determine the cause so that effective treatment can be provided. Effective treatment may include antibiotics, antifungal, antiparasitic etc.
As soon as the cause is found, treatment will follow.
On your side just make sure the baby is properly re-hydrated.
Also make sure that the baby is not intolerant to the current food as that might be responsible for the loose motions.

Hope this helps
