Child Has Nosebleed After Injury, Swelling, Discoloration. Applied Ice, Taken Ibuprofen. Need For Doctor?
Hi my 4 year old fell off the back of our play set today at 5pm. He fell straight down landing on his hands and face. His nose bled a lot but stopped after 10 mins of pinching but lots of blood stayed up in there. Swollen and slight discolor. Took him down the street to urgent care who took x ray but say inconclusive due to swelling cartilage. Thought face contusion but sent it off for evaluation. The left side nostril is very swollen even inside. I have iced every 20 mins and gave ibuprofen.
Should I still go to a hospital tomorrow or my family md? Er is very expensive and didnt want to over react or ask for ct if not necessary. i just worry since there may be facial bones in there etc and even about there being no packing or instruction on clots or what to do with the blood in there?
He is sleeping- woke him to give him ibuprofen dose. Thanks Worried mom
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. I can understand your concern regarding your baby.
Based on the description, I don't think that your son has sustained any serious injuries.
If there is no visible big swelling or facial assymetry in the form of depression or deviation of the nose or the other facial bone, then it can be taken granted that he has not sustained any major bony fractures.
The mild swelling and discoloration will settle down with time. Don't try to pull the blood clots from the nostrils as they may bleed again. Leave them alone untill they become dry and fall off.
If you are still concerned, approach your treating physician.
