Child Has Redness Around Anal Region, Applied Baby Lotion
Good evening sir, Im from Chennai, MBBS graduate, im having a 25 days female baby. My daughter is having redness around anal reign for past two days. I applied baby lotion (Johnson s baby lotion ) and found the redness reduced temporarily. Today still it persist even after applying lotion. May I know the cause and treatment for this redness. I don t feel it as rash , its just inflammation. I m not using diapers, using only washable clothes.

Noted your query.
Its good that you are not using diapers for your baby. However, the area around the anus may remain moist after washing as a baby of this age passes frequent stool and this leads to rash or inflammation. Do not apply lotions
There is a possibility of mild yeast infection due to this.Apply an antifungal ointment in the area after drying such as 'candid b', till the rash completely heals.Then the following steps can be taken to prevent further rash.
1.After every stool, the anal area must be washed with water well and dried by patting and not rubbing.
2. A barrier cream or coconut oil can be rubbed liberally around the genital areas after every urine or stool to prevent contact of skin with urine or stool.
3. the clothes used instead of diapers, should be washed in hot water and dried in the sun.
4. Wash your baby after urination from front to back to prevent UTI.( as it is common in girl babies)

It is not uncommon for babies to develop perianal rash. Apart from diapers there are other causes for perianal redness like excessively cleaning the area with soap and water after the baby passes stools, the acidic nature of the stools itself and fungal infection. However if your baby is having diarrhea, it could have resulted in secondary lactose intolerance causing perianal excoriation. You must be aware of the terms so using them liberally as you are an MBBS graduate.You can follow a few simple steps. After cleaning the area with water, dry it with a clean towel. Do not rub the area, just pat it dry. Apply siloderm over the affected area and hopefully the problem will resolve in around 3 to 4 days.

Apart from diaper dermatitis redness around anal region may be due acidic stool or ammonical reaction from urine. Get a stool test done for reducing substance to check whether any lactose intolerance is there. Keep the area clean and dry by gentle wiping after each stool (avoid rubbing). Apply diaper rash cream after changing nappy each time. Do it regularly for 5-7 days. By these measures rashes will resolve.
