Child Having Fever, Rash Patches In Body, Pale Lips. Running Nose, Coarse Cough, Large Tonsils. What To Do?

hi my son had a fever for 3 days, then it stopped and the next night he had small blotchy rash patches in different areas of his body. when he woke they werre gone and for the past 2 mornings when hes woken up had very pale lips. just tonight his nose became slightly runny (yellowish green) and hes got a very deep coarse cough. im concerned about dehydration as hes very phlegmy and right now has large tonsils and adnoids and is a chronic mouth breather anyhow but he is drinking less and can barely swallow small sips. what should i do?

Hi there,

With your son having enlarged tonsils and deep coarse cough, and him barely taking any liquids, he may be suffering from tonsillitis or pharyngitis.
It may be more likely viral since his fever has gone. But even with viral infection, there are chances of superimposed bacterial infection that can happen.
He needs to be taken to a physician to have an examination of his throat done and to check his hydration status.
Your doctor may suggest a throat culture to be done, if he feels the need to do so.
Most importantly, he will need to be rehydrated since he is currently unable to swallow liquids well.
Until you see your physician, continue to encourage your son to drink sips of liquid every 10-15 minutes.
If he starts having drooling or unable to swallow his spit or is unable to open his mouth fully or has a heavy voice or is not urinating well, then he needs to be taken immediately to his doctor without any delay.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
