Child Having Frequent Vomitting, Diarrhoea. Drinking Pedialite. See The Doctor Immediately?

My 6 year old has been vomiting and had diarrhea for 4 days. The first day she threw up about 12 times. The diarrhea started the next day but wasn t very frequent but she started running a fee of 101/102. The next day fever was gone and she seemed better. Vomiting and diarrhea had stopped and she ate a few things. Then at the end of day 3 the diarrhea came back bad and frequent. Now on day four and diarrhea is gone but she vomits every few hours. No fever still. She drinks pedia lite but I am getting very concerned. Do I need to seek medical attention immediately? She is not showing any signs of dehydration but can this just be a stomach bug????

Pediatrician 's  Response
From the history it points out to be a viral gastoenteritis. It could be bcoz of recent travel in the previous week, or outside food intake or viral URI .Happy from the point child is not dehydrated.Dont worry it wil settle in 2- 3 days. Just use any vomiting prevention medicine and give soft diet( idly, rice based diet). Moniter urine output.Give tender coconut water, butter milk, curd, dhal water ( few sips each hour) if dehydrated

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Your child is having Gastroenteritis mostly due to a virus.

The mainstay of treatment is to maintain hydration by giving oral rehydration solutions like Pedialyte.

If there are still vomitings, you can give anti emetic like ondansetron in prescribed dosage.

Monitor her hydration by her urine output, activity, and skin turgor.

But she needs physical examination by her Pediatrician to assess the hydration status.

Therefore I advise you to consult the Pediatrician for the examination and for specific treatment.
Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
