Yesterday he was sick one and it was mainly watery and bile , and today he s been sick. He has had a runny nose since Tuesday and bit of a temperature last night. What could it be? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Ashley

Thank you very much for writing to us. This is a very common problem. Children usually develop fever after vaccination. Nothing to worry about. What you do need to do is keep the child well hydrated. Keep giving small amounts of fluids even if they are vomiting. Try giving oral rehydrating salts (ORS) to replace the salts they are loosing. Give small but multiple feeds.

For fever you can use any over the counter syrups. Keep the temperature in check. If the temperature does not respond to medication you can use wet soaks with Luke warm water. Signs that you need to look out for are.
Inability or refusal to feed
Loss of consciousness
Extreme lethargy
Seizures
If any of these occur you need to consult a doctor. This condition will get better in 5 to 7 days on its own and you don't have anything to worry about at the moment.

Thank you again for writing to us. Take care of yourself and your family.

Yours sincerely

Pediatrician Dr. Balaji Chinnasami's  Response
Hi dear,
He is probably suffering from a viral illness which can present as fever, running nose and babies do become irritable and sleepless with illness. This illness doesn't seem to have any relation with MMR vaccination. Keep giving her paracetamol for fever, keep him hydrated with fluids. If problem dooesn't improve in two or three days, show him to a pediatrician. Don't worry he will be fine.
Take care
