Child Taken Phototherapy For Jaundice. Should Bera Test Be Done If There Is No Apparent Hearing Problem?
My daughter was born pre-term and had high levels of jaundice in the first week or so, with bilirubin count exceeding 26 at one stage. She was put under photo-therapy and responded well with jaundice levels coming down to normal within about 48 hrs. We were advised to get a bera test done between 3~4 months to check her hearing capability. She is now 3.5 months' and we are quite sure that she hears normally as she is responding to sounds both while awake and when not in deep sleep. My question is-
1) Should we still get the test done now that we don't see any hearing problem with her? Does the test detect something internally which we miss when we test her hearing response to sounds externally and find that to be okay? Is the test now an 'extreme precaution' or still a reasonable necessity? 2) Can we do it later when we suspect something - is there any added advantage in getting it done now rather than later? 3) are there any special precautions that we should take while testing, given her age (as stated earlier 3.5 months)
Its the idea of putting such a small one to test that is making us think about the issue.

Child Taken Phototherapy For Jaundice. Should Bera Test Be Done If There Is No Apparent Hearing Problem?
Hi, Thanks for writing to health care magic. It is a reasonable necessity. Get BERA done when the serum bilirubin crossed 26.... No get it done at the right time. No nothing special is required. Continue to ask further queries as required. Hope this helps. Take care. Dr Y V Siva Sankara Murty M.D.(Pediatrics) Associate Professor of Pediatrics
