Child Taking Medicine For Cold And Wheezing. Passing Less Urine. Need To Worry?
Hi Doctor, My son is 5 months old.He has got a bit of cold and was having wheezing last week and he is on medication. No antibiotics. My concern is since last 2-3days he is passing less urine and also at times is yellowish. He is active. Also I must mention that even I was having viral and was on antibiotics. So is it a singn of some worry.? Kindly reply. Thanking you.
I am so sorry to hear what your son is experiencing.
From the information you have provided, the amount of urine we pass and its coloration is closely linked to the amount of water we drink. So if your son is sick and cannot dring as much as he was while healthy, this may explain why his urine output is less and the color yellow. This actually represents a concentrated urine that settle with low water intake than the body would have really loved to.
My advice is that you increase the amount of liquids and monitor the urine output. It should increase. If it doesn't, then you may want to get him consulted. This is quite unlikely that you would need to get consulted.
Hope this helps and provides enough information for you to act on. I wish you well. Dr. Ditah, MD
The decreased urine output may indicate mild dehydration.
There may be a reduction in oral intake because he feels generally unwell or due to nasal congestion. If the nose is congested then children may decrease their fluid intake because they are using the mouth to breath.
You should check to see if he is taking his normal amount of milk. If he does not wish to drink a lot at a time, you can offer it at frequent periods throughout the day.
