Dear Michael,

A small bladder could indeed be the cause of his repeated visits to the loo, but sometimes, there could be acute causes such as a cold weather, a urinary tract infection, or bladder irritation by some form of intrusions, e.g. pin worm.

I recommend that you take him to his doctor for an evaluation and get his urine tested as a starting point. Further treatment would depend on the results of the urine test.

Diabetes at this age is highly unusual, though not unknown. If both your parents had childhood type diabetes, then, sure, there is a chance that your son could get the problem, but this would likely cause many other problems like loss of weight, persistent infections, eating large amounts of food in addition to passing a lot of pee, etc.

Pediatrician Dr. Emmette Clark's  Response
He likely is just fine and is having what we call a spastic bladder. No one knows the cause of this condition but the good news is that it is temporary. You will likely notice that he does not get up at night to empty his bladder over and over which would be the case with diabetes. Just give him a week or so and it will pass.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

After a physical examination by your doctor your child needs to have a urine test and blood sugar examination.

The urine examination along with culture and sensitivity will help to identify if infection is the cause for this problem.
Blood sugar examination will help to reveal if diabetes is the cause for this.
Please do not neglect this problem and consult your doctor for the same.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
