Child With Ear Infection. Taking Augmentin, Flucloxacillin. Smelly Pus From Ear. Any Danger?
Hello, my four year old son has had an ear infection for the last 10 weeks. He is on his 10th course of antibiotics. He has been taking augmentin, flucloxacillin and another one I can t remember the name of beginning with E. he has just been given augmentin again. He has smelly pus coming from his ear which seems to change colour and consistency depending on which antibiotic he is having. I m at my wits end. I have read infections can spread. Will I look foolish taking him to a&e?
Hello, your son has recurrent ear infections . You can get done a Xray soft tissue lateral view neck (for nasopharynx to see for adenoids). he might be having enlarged adenoid tissue ( which are tonsils behind the nose) which can block ear opening behind the nose(eustachian tube). that is why his infections are not going. If adenoids are enlarged they can be removed surgically . Secondly if you are giving your child with pacifiers eg. artificial nipples to suck then please stop doing it as they cause infections. Keep ears dry ie take care that water does not enter his ears while bathing.
If in doubt do reply.
