Child With Fever, Congested Cough, Running Nose. Diagnosed Viral Infection. Advised Tylenol, Advil, Ventoulin For 9 Days. Give For 9 Days?

Hi doc. My almost 6 yrs old daughter is having a fever now for 10 days. It went up to 40.3 on the 3rd day and vomitted so we took her to the ER. They said her lungs (breathing) and urine test are ok. On thr 5th day we took her back to ER coz she vomitted again and because she has now a congested cough, runny/ stuffy nose and during this 5 days her fever were up to 39.8; Blood, urine, and X-ray test were done and all came
back normal. On the 8 day, took her back to family doc and said it just a viral infection and check her breathing and said its clear. I am worried because I have been giving her Tylenol and Advil ( alternate) for the past 9 days now. What could this be? She doesn't cough as much as before anymore ( gibe her ventoulin 2x/day for 3 days now. and her fever from the 8th day were all around 38 to 39 deg. Pls help

Pediatrician 's  Response
Dear user,

Having a sick child for that long can drain anyone, and I understand your plight. It appears that someone prescribed two anti-fever medications to you and asked that you give them to your daughter alternately. This is counterproductive, since a) although it may keep the fever down, the cause will not go away and b) it becomes too much medicine to give to a child. Hence, I suggest that you stay either with paracetamol or Advil and not give both.

If your doctors are insisting that her chest is clear, there is no reason to continue Ventolin, which is given for constricted chests or those with breathing difficulty. Perhaps you need to ask the doctor to seek a second opinion.
