Hello,
Steroids sometimes have to be given for an acute episode of asthma, although it is best to avoid by using regular inhalers.
1 in 3 children will have allergic asthma so it is important that the allergic triggers are identified, if there are any.
Asthma medications need to be reviewed - a combination inhaler (corticosteroid plus long acting beta agonist) can be given but you can start with a low dose inhaled corticosteroid and keep asthalin for emergency use.
Inhaled corticosteroids also have side effects (usual ones with steroids such as HA axis suppression, stunted growth) but intense use in the beginning followed by the most little amount will help.
Addition of montelukast 4mg will also help lowering the amount of inhaled corticosteroids.
I hope that helps.
Thanks.
