Constipation, Stomach Pain. Need To See Specialist?

My boyfriend has being having issues with being completely backed up and unable to go the bathroom very often at all! Back in May he went to the hospital and they told him he was sooooo backed up it needed to be fixed...or could become very toxic. Last month he went to another Doc gave him a drink that is given to ppl going for surgery...it seemed to help but now he is having the same pain that has him buckling over. Should he be requesting to see a specialist?

Hi
Thanks for using Health Care Magic Forum,

Its advisable to see specialist sooner as constipation not cured eveen by medications.
a low intake of dietary fiber, inadequate amounts of fluids, poor ambulation or immobility, or medications that are associated with constipation
Physical examination may be done manually by the physician, or by using a colonoscope. X-rays of the abdomen, generally only performed if bowel obstruction is suspected, may reveal extensive impacted fecal matter in the colon, and confirm or rule out other causes of similar symptoms.

Chronic constipation (symptoms present at least three days per month for more than three months) associated with abdominal discomfort is often diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome .

General & Family Physician Dr. Polash Sannigrahi's  Response
Hello dear,

The causes of constipation can be:
1. Any pathology/ sub acute obstruction in the Gastrointestinal tract
2. Irritable bowel syndrome- constipation predominant type.
3. Functional cause- due to decreased gastric motility
4. Inadequate intake of fluids and fiber rich diet.
5. Hormonal & Metabolic causes, etc.

Though symptomatic relief can be obtained by salt water flush or intake of Laxatives, their regular use is not advised.
And as long as the underlying cause is not treated, symptoms will keep recurring.

So, kindly consult a Gastroenterologist & get a proper physical examination done.
Investigations like complete blood count, Ultrasound scan of abdomen, Colonoscopy & contrast studies will be helpful to rule out any pathological cause for your symptoms.

There is no need to worry, your friend will be fine.
Till then, maintain adequate hydration & proper nutrition status.

Wishing him a good health.
