Could I-pill Cause Hormonal Imbalance?

Hi, I took i-pill first time in 2009, then again in 2010..that time my periods didn t stop for many days...then I got lumps in my breast in 2012...in mid 2014 again I had to take i-pill. And i think for past 2 and half years my menses get irregular, sometimes they are on time n sometimes not. Because of this harmonal disturbance i had miscarriage few days back. My question is it possible that because of i-pill, harmones in my body got disturb?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, it may cause hormonal imbalance. The emergency contraceptive pills like I-pill contain similar hormones as present in normal contraceptive pills but in a higher dose.

Due to the higher dose of hormones, it is more likely hormonal imbalance resulting in irregular menses.

However, I-pill use is not associated with miscarriage. You are advised to consult your doctor to determine its cause and its appropriate treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
