Could Altered Dosage Of Brintellix Cause Slurred Speech, Low BP, Dizziness And Nausea?

My doctor upped my Brintellix from 10 mg to 20 mg last Thursday. Since Friday I haven t been able to hardly get out of bed. I felt fine today until about 45 mins after I took my meds. My blood pressure dropped , my speech was slurred, I was sweaty, clammy, dizzy, and I feel nauseated. My doctors office closed at noon today. Do you think its related to the Brintellix? I m also on Viibryd 40 mg and Fanapt 4 mg 2x daily. Or does it sound like Serotonin syndrome? My B/P dropped to 60/80

Hi,

Brintellix contains nortriptyline which belongs to the group of antidepressant medications known as tricyclic antidepressant medications is used to treat depression. It is thought to work by increasing the activity of serotonin in the brain. Sudden increased dosage of Brintellix may cause some side effects like chest pain or discomfort, nausea, vomiting, slurred speech, hypotension or dropped blood pressure, cold and clammy skins, dizziness, lightheadedness, breathing difficulties, unexplained fainting, unexplained fainting, weakness, pain or discomfort in the arms, jaw, back or neck etc.

These side effects may go away with treatment as the body adjusts to the medicine. But, if these side effects persist for long or bother you, then you should consult your doctor promptly for medical help. Don't stop taking this medication despite side effects without consulting your doctor. Take this medication only as directed by your doctor. Don't take more of it, don't take it more often and don't take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
