Could Drinking Alcohol Cause Seizure In A Diabetic?
I friend of mine just had a small seizure. He has been drinking heavily lately and also has high blood pressure and type two diabetes. Could the alcohol cause the seizure? He had a small one and then fell asleep and is sleeping now. Do I need to wake him up?
Based on the history the seizure appears to be due to hypoglycemia (decreased blood sugar levels). Heavy drinking with poor nutrition can actually decrease the blood sugar level causing it to drop into dangerous levels, especially for people with diabetes causing seizure. Sometime alcohol consumption can trigger or unmasks the seizures as well. He should be taken to the emergency room of your nearby hospital for further evaluation and immediate treatment of hypoglycemia.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
