Could Elevated Bilirubin Levels Be Related To Anxiety In A Child?

My 15 year old son has elevated bilirubin levels- Dr. recs getting blood test again in 2 weeks. He has Anxiety/OCD, which has been elevated recently and he lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks. I thought this was due to anxiety for this has occurred before. He laso was ill 3 weeks ago with stomach upset and fever.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing in HCM.
Your son's anxiety/OCD has nothing to do with increased bilirubin levels. He may be little irritable due to stomach upset and fever, as you have mentioned.
His bilirubin level increase may be due to acute viral hepatitis, a viral infection of liver. It also causes fever and stomach upset.
Usually it is self limiting and hence treated with Tab.Paracetamol 500 mg for fever. He must be on strictly fat free carbohydrate rich easily digestible diet during this period.
The fever may subside in 5 to 10 days.
After 2 weeks, you should notice a drop in his bilirubin levels.
Hpe this information finds useful.
