Could Extreme Sleepiness In A Teenager Be Due To Low Blood Sugar?

My brother has been over sleeping, barely eating and told one of his friends he s forgetting a lot and doesn t know if he s sleeping or if things are real. He s 18 and about to go to university a few hours away in September and it s currently his exam week which he doesn t seem stressed about and he s seems to just sleep all day and night for the past few days. One of his friends confided in me and told me they might be worried. I fell like its the stress of going far and will go away soon but my friends thinks I should take it more seriously and take him to a doctor. Also less than a month ago my mom was randomly checking his blood sugar levels were too low. My dad has type one diabetes and my mom has type two the doctor had said he was fine though. I don t know if all that has a connection or not. Please help me and I thank you ahead for your time

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Over sleeping at age 18 years old could be related to hormonal problems especially those related to thyroid. So, the very first step is to check these hormones. His blood sugar of too low is not indicating diabetes, on contrary, it is indicating reactive hypoglycemia. However, I should have a look at the lab reports first before giving final conclusions. Depression and anxiety are also to consider if no organic problem has been found out. Discuss this further with his caring doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
