Could Fever And Inflammation Of Ear After A Cut Indicate Symptoms Of Infection?

Goodevening Dr., if a boy had a cut behind his ear and gets inflamed, becomes red, and develops a fever, these are signs of infection correct? Can all these signs of infection and fever develop overnight? Or, would you say at least 2-3 days had passed for these to occur? Thank you!
