Could Having Dengue Before Conceiving Cause Jaundice In The Newborn?

my cousin had dengue and lost her first baby and got pregnant again after about 5 months. She delivered a full term baby few days ago and now the baby has Jaundice. Is this due to her previous condition of high bilirubin levels, as the baby too have high bilirubin levels now. Please advice. Thanks.

Hi,

Answer is 'NO'. The Jaundice in baby is not due to dengue. Nearly half the babies born will have jaundice called as physiological jaundice. Jaundice is due to excess bilirubin formed of more red cell destruction in the newborns which is more difficult to metabolized by the new liver. It subsides on its own within two or three weeks. Jaundice within 24 hours of delivery is significant.

There are several other causes for pathological jaundice in babies such enzyme disorder, congenital liver disease, Rh incompatibility between mother and baby, blood group mismatch, etc. Jaundice is significant, if the bilirubin levels are high in blood which may affect baby's brain. Phototherapy is first line treatment in physiological jaundice. It converts the bilirubin into a water soluble product by oxidation which get excreted via babies poo. Exchange transfusion is the treatment option in advanced disease. Pathological jaundice will be treated upon the cause. Breastfeed should be continued in jaundice.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
