Could Head Injury Cause Gagging?

My son fell on a carpet (with concrete under) floor one week ago. About 30 minutes later he vomited. We took him to the doctor and since he didn't vomit or show any other problematic signs the rest of the day he said he should be fine. Ever since then he has been gagging alot and threw up 2 days later, 5 days later and then again 7 days later. What should I do? Does it just take awhile for the injury to heal and still causes this or is this possibly something worse that the impact caused?

Hello. Thanks for asking form HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that your son is conscious, oriented and able to do activities.

The vomiting occurring after head injury should never be ignored in children. It occurs mostly due to increased pressure in brain either due to bleed or edema. Vomiting is considered as sign of dangerous head injury.

The doctor observed your child and then discharged as your son had no symptoms suggestive of dangerous head injury. But as your son is having recurrent vomiting, he must be evaluated by doctor. You should take him to ER.

CT head may be advised to rule out any collection/bleed or skull bone fracture. Fracture is usually managed by conservative treatment while bleed or collection may require evacuation.

Mean while at home, you can follow few tips

: Avoid pressure at injury site
: Feel injury site for any collection
: Keep his head at higher level than chest
: If he is on some medication, ask doctor whether drugs can cause vomiting. That drug should be stopped.
: You can give him Domperidone syrup after proper prescription
: In case of vomiting, turn his head to side

Hope it will help you. Thanks.

Take care.
