Could Intake Of Malarone Cause Gastric Ulcers And Increased Stomach Acid?

Hi I m currently in India (second trip). Am taking Malarone daily as did last time. Was very unwell last trip. About 6months after returning home I spent time in hospital with multiple gastric ulcers due to anti inflammatories (as thought). I ve woken with the same gastric pain and haven t taken any anti inflammatories. Just wondering whether Malarone could actually be a cause of gastric ulcers/increased stomach acid? Have also had a lot of wind and enlarged stomach for the past five or so days (just assumed I was eating too much). Thanks

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Yes. The abdominal pain and bloating may be due to atovaquone and proguanil in malarone.
it is the usual side effect of malarone.
Some other gastrointestinal side effects are Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, Mouth ulcers.
It may also cause the inflammation in liver called Hepatitis and jaundice.

If you are my patient, i would treat you with Proton pump inhibitors and Simethicone for a week.
If pain and bloating sensation continues, I will ask you to do the liver function test and ultrasound abdomen to rule out any Hepatitis.
If there is any sign of hepatitis, i would like to stop the Malarone and substitute other anti malarial agents.

Hope this helps.
Please write back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
