Hi I have just had a high MCV test come back. I did consume a lot of alcohol the night before. Could this be why. Doctor has told me never to drink alcohol again as my body clearly isn t reacting to it well although I do have gastro problems and constant pain in the stomach with difficulty passing stools sometimes., could there be another reason other than alcohol or do I have to stop drinking forever. I am only 27
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.
I believe your doctor to be right, alcohol abuse is related to increased MCV as well as to many other health issues. Of course I intend prolonged use not an isolated drinking episode the night before. So you should stop drinking alcohol or at least only in moderate amounts if you don't want to have any more serious repercussions in the future. Other reasons for high MCV are folic acid or vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic liver disease (but these in turn are again related to alcohol abuse effect on stomach and liver) as well as hypothyroidism.
I hope to have been of help.
